January 1, 2008.
In NSW state politics, Opposition Leader Barry O'Farrell says the Government's "fines for crimes" scheme only benefits criminals. This is on the back of a report thats shows only a fifth of offenders given on-the-spot fines pay them straight away, leaving authorities to follow up the rest.
The government implemneted the scheme to "reduce paperwork and red tape for the police." That doesn't seem to be the case. Hmmmm
And Victoria has become the first Australian state with a human rights charter. From today, Victorian citizens will have basic human rights, like freedom of speech and freedom of religion, protected under a new charter. And hopefully now the other states will follow suit.
