- Violence flared in Pakistan on Sunday during the Muslim festival of Ashura, as President Pervez Musharraf arrived in Europe on a four-nation tour aimed at bolstering support for his government. This was bound to happen, really. The militaristic leader leaves and all hell breaks loose.
- More than eight million Cubans have begun casting votes for a new National Assembly, which will choose the country's president, amid doubts about whether ailing Fidel Castro will retake the reins. Castro has led Communist Cuba since 1959 but says he will not 'cling to power' or obstruct the rise of a new generation of leaders. And we thought John Howard's term in office was long.
- Meanwhile, Lebanon's Parliament spokesman, Nabih Berri, says their country's presidential election has been postponed again! This is the 13th delay of a vote blocked by the country's political crisis.
- Egypt's Foreign Ministry has cancelled political talks with senior European Union officials after a European Parliament resolution criticised the state of human rights in Egypt.
- And finally, Russia has now delivered more than half the fuel for Iran's Bushehr nuclear power plant, after a fourth consignment arrived at the Bushehr site in southern Iran.
