News From The Front

In Australian political news, the Federal Community Services Minister, Jenny Macklin, has told a Melbourne radio station that there is a great need to expand the number of homeless shelters in Australia.
After making it an election issue, Kevin Rudd and his newly elected Labor Party will begin a map to increase the number of homeless shelters by 600 by introducing a national rental affordability scheme. Sounds great, but don't count your chickens before they hatch.
In Tasmania, anti-pulp mill activists believe an investigation into the Tamar Valley illustrates what we already know: Gunns cannot be trusted when it comes to ensuring the new mill complies with safety standards. It is alleged that one of the very first steps, clearing at the mill site, has breached the Federal Government's 48 environmental regulations.
Even though the cooperation 'has it over' government, both at the State and Federal level, even though they have ruined numerous outspoken journalists’ careers, and have destroyed more than 80% of Tasmania’s rainforests; they sadly hold the political sway in Tassie and can do what the please.
Meanwhile, The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission insist it will bring lower prices at the petrol pumps by weakening the big fuel companies' grasp on storage facilities. This will be done, apparently, by allowing smaller retailers access to storage, rather than merely give all the sway to the four major oil companies. Sounds like a wonderful idea, but really; let’s be realistic. The ACCC can jump and scream like a madman, but the petroleum industry won’t listen. Why? Greed. And because the government make a large fortune from the profits. Fabricated election promise? Time will tell..
