Compensation hand-outs or bureaucratic 'funding'?
This is the question the Federal government need's to think long and hard about.
I was originally all-for more funding and support in places that need the most attention, i.e. far north Queensland and the Alice Springs region. But now I am favouring compensation; merely because these victoms deserve money for their trauma and that includes any interest associated with it. The money will be directly distributed, minus red-tape, meaning that those who speak up, get support.
The lawyer of Bruce Trevorrow, the first member of the Stolen Generation to successfully sue a state government, says that setting up compensation schemes would be a cheaper and easier way to achieve justice.
Trevorrow was a baby when he was placed in state care without his parents' knowledge, in the 1950's. Last August he was awarded $500,000 in damages and yesterday the South Australian Supreme Court granted another $250,000 in interest.
