A New Year At Midnight
December 31st 2007 07:02
December 31, 2007.
Well this is it for 2007 and it certainly has been an action-pack year to say the least. A year when the Federal government changed hand's after almost 12 years of conservative governing, led by the persuasive, yet at times, mistrusting John Howard. As it stands, Labor only appears to be a lesser version of Liberal conservatism, but hopefully that will change (slightly) in the new year.
2007 - A year of accusations and stark opinions in the Madeleine McCann case. A year when the only thing racing was the infamous equine flue and Andrew John’s heart as he pronounced to the country that he was indeed a junkie and a footballer.
2007 - A year when Australia took a stand in the fight to save our planet by ratifying the Kyoto Protocol. It marked also another year of fighting/peacekeeping/training in Iraq, Afghanistan and East Timor.
2007 - A year when natural disasters, in particular bushfires in California, Hurricane Dean in the Caribbean and of cause the mass flooding in India, Bangladesh and Indonesia left millions homeless.
2007 - A year when saving workers’ rights became a headline issue, thanks largely to the union movement and their powerful campaign, and epitomised superbly through asbestos campaigner Bernie Banton.
2007 - A year when Sydney hosted the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit, which strangely enough turned out to be (unless I am grossly mistaken) a complete and utter waste of everybody’s time and money. The only thing it proved was that John Howard had no political sway in world affairs and foreign policy, even in our region, and that Kevin Rudd, who so elegantly spoke fluent Cantonese to the Chinese President, had the goods to lead Australia into a new era.
All the best, and have a safe and happy New Year.
Simon
